Pennsylvania Bucket Bench Class

In this class, you’ll be making a Pennsylvania Bucket Bench in 1/12th scale.

Before indoor plumbing, bucket benches were often used to hold buckets of water for use in kitchens. But they also can be used to store kitchenware, dishes, and pots and pans. The original bucket bench that inspired this project was made in Pennsylvania in the 19th century.

In this class you’ll learn:

• Hand-tool safety
• Joinery techniques
• How to use a jeweler’s saw to cut wood
• Sanding and preparing wood for finishing
• Painting techniques
• Aging techniques

This is an online, self-guided class using hand-tools. Instructions will be a combination of written directions, photographs and videos. I will send registered students class materials including wooden components with pre-cut joinery and some essential tools and supplies. Students will also need to provide some tools on their own. In the class, students will use a jeweler’s saw, files and sandpaper to cut and shape the scroll-cut profile of the bucket bench. After preparing the wood, students will assemble the bucket bench, paint it and apply some aging techniques.

The bucket bench dimensions are about 3.6″ wide x 3.875″ tall x 1.1″ deep.
